Check Engine Light

What is a check engine light?

The check engine light is reserved for computer system or emissions related problems.

How does it work?

When a problem has been detected by the on-board computer, a trouble code is generated and the check engine light comes on. The light may cycle and on off, but the problem may remain the computer completes the test cycles.

What to do if your check engine light turns on

When the check engine light comes on, the vehicle may appear to run normally, or you may notice:

  • Engine stalling or misfires

  • Decreased fuel economy

  • Excessive smoke from tailpipe

Can I drive with the check engine light on?

If the problem is not addressed, it can have several effects:

  • Wear and tear on other components which may lead to larger and more expensive repairs

  • Automatic failure of the state emissions inspection
